How Facebook Can Help You Recruit Top-Notch Talent
By Cindy Waxer HRWorld.comHanding out glossy leaflets at campus job fairs is fast becoming a thing of the past as an increasing number of companies discover the power of Facebook to recruit college students. Take, for example, Boeing. Last year, the U.S. aerospace giant advertised a contest on the wildly popular social-networking site in which users could win an iPod Nano or an iTunes gift card. Facebook members who entered the sweepstakes listened to a short video promoting the company and answered a multiple-choice quiz. Boeing then followed up with employment opportunities.
Boeing isn’t the only company to turn to Facebook as the war for talented twenty-somethings heats up in today’s highly competitive job market. Said Mark Mehler, co-founder of CareerXroads, a New Jersey-based staffing strategy and consulting firm, “For the college-aged candidate, social networks like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and LinkedIn are the latest and greatest tools out in the marketplace to attract the best.”
Ernst & Young is familiar with Facebook’s on-campus appeal. When the accounting firm needed more than 5,500 college recruits for internships and entry-level jobs in North America last year, it created a page on Facebook with information, video testimonials and discussion boards targeting college students. The strategy caught on like wildfire: As of October, Ernst & Young’s profile boasted more than 11,000 members.

But a company doesn’t necessarily have to take matters into its own hands to leverage Facebook’s rep with the college crowd. Plenty of job boards — including CareerBuilder, Jobster and Yahoo! HotJobs — have developed Facebook applications to connect with the social-networking site’s 41 million active users.
